An 18-year-old Washington man has been arrested and five additional suspects are being sought after investigators concluded that illegal fireworks allegedly ignited the deadly Chelan Hills Fire.
Michael Yakimov of Kent was arrested September 2 on suspicion of first-degree manslaughter, first-degree arson, malicious mischief and six assault counts connected to firefighters injured during the blaze. A judge reportedly set his bail at $1 million.
Investigators believe a group riding in a truck was launching fireworks near roadside vegetation shortly after midnight on July 4. The resulting wildfire burned approximately 10,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 structures, including 19 homes. Robert Lister, 69, died after becoming trapped in his vehicle during the evacuation.
Douglas County Sheriff Tyler Caille said five other adults believed to have been involved remain under investigation and could face similar charges.
