Payne & Logan Co. First Assistant District Attorney Booked On Child Porn Charges

A former Oklahoma prosecutor who once helped represent the justice system in Payne and Logan counties is now at the center of a disturbing child exploitation case that has shocked many across the state. Kevin Etherington, who served as First Assistant District Attorney for Payne and Logan counties, was arrested after investigators said cyber tips connected him to child sexual abuse material.

The case began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded cyber tips to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. OSBI’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit later identified Etherington as a possible suspect and executed a search warrant at his Stillwater home. At the time, Etherington was serving in a high-ranking prosecutor role for the district attorney’s office covering Payne and Logan counties.

Investigators said the evidence connected Etherington to digital files involving child sexual abuse material. Reports from the time of his arrest said authorities booked him into the Payne County Jail on charges including aggravated possession of child pornography and a violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act. He was fired from his position after the arrest.

The case drew even more attention because of Etherington’s role as a prosecutor. District attorneys and assistant district attorneys are trusted to enforce the law, protect victims, and prosecute crimes. When someone in that position is accused of the same type of crime that prosecutors are expected to fight, it creates a major breach of public trust.

Court records from the Oklahoma Supreme Court show that the Oklahoma Bar Association moved quickly after Etherington’s arrest. The court issued an emergency interim suspension from the practice of law, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the risk to public trust in the legal system. The court record also stated that Etherington had been employed as First Assistant District Attorney for Payne and Logan counties when the investigation began.

Recent reports say Etherington was later found guilty and sentenced to serve 20 years in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. That outcome turned the case from an allegation into a conviction, making it one of the most disturbing public corruption and child exploitation stories connected to an Oklahoma prosecutor in recent years.

The case also raises larger questions about accountability inside law enforcement and legal institutions. Prosecutors have the power to decide charges, argue for punishment, negotiate plea deals, and speak for victims in court. When a prosecutor is exposed as a criminal defendant in a child exploitation case, the public naturally questions how someone in such a trusted position avoided scrutiny for so long.

For Payne and Logan counties, the Etherington case is a painful reminder that public office does not make anyone above the law. The same justice system he once worked inside eventually became the system that investigated, prosecuted, and punished him.

The story continues to matter because it involves children, digital exploitation, public trust, and the responsibility of legal officials to uphold the law they enforce. Kevin Etherington’s fall from First Assistant District Attorney to prison inmate shows how serious the consequences can be when a person entrusted with justice is found guilty of violating it.
