A newly filed lawsuit alleges that a San Diego mental health facility failed to intervene after receiving warnings about one of the gunmen involved in the deadly Islamic Center of San Diego shooting.
According to the lawsuit, the FBI contacted the mother of 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez on May 14, 2026, regarding concerning comments he allegedly made about mass shootings on the dark web. Vazquez was living at Park Mental Health Treatment while receiving care for depression, psychotic episodes and other conditions. His mother says she promptly shared the warning with facility staff.
Vazquez reportedly left the facility shortly before he and another teenager attacked the Islamic Center on May 18. Three men were killed before the gunmen died by suicide. The lawsuit contends that staff failed to properly respond despite repeated warnings that Vazquez could pose a danger to himself or others.
Park Mental Health has denied negligence and maintains that responsibility rests with Vazquez and his accomplice. The allegations have not yet been decided in court. Associated Press
