A Pennsylvania police corporal has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed college student who mistakenly approached the wrong home.
Upper Pottsgrove Police Cpl. Sean Farrell, 58, was charged in the August 23 death of 22-year-old Glenwood Earl Pysher IV. Authorities said Pysher became separated from friends and mistakenly approached a residence while trying to reach another home nearby. The residents called 911 after hearing someone at the back door.
Montgomery County prosecutors say body-camera footage showed Pysher raising his hands after Farrell arrived. Investigators concluded that Pysher was unarmed, approximately 17 to 20 feet away and did not pose an immediate threat when Farrell fired twice.
District Attorney Kevin Steele said Farrell had less-lethal options available but did not use them. Farrell surrendered to authorities and was released on $75,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 10. The charge remains an allegation, and Farrell is presumed innocent unless convicted. Associated Press
