Federal prosecutors in Utah say two unrelated cases led to the seizure of approximately 204,000 fentanyl pills in one week. The cases involve separate defendants and separate allegations; neither defendant has been convicted, and each is presumed innocent.

Two separate cases

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced August 20 that two people were charged in separate complaints after investigations by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force. Prosecutors said the matters are unrelated.

In one case, prosecutors allege that a search of a residence, vehicle and storage unit in West Valley City produced substances field-tested as fentanyl and methamphetamine. In the other, prosecutors allege that a controlled purchase preceded a search of a hotel room in Salt Lake County.

The figures cited by prosecutors

The Justice Department said agents estimated roughly 93,000 fentanyl pills in one case and roughly 111,000 in the other. Those estimates and the description of the evidence come from the government’s announcement and court-related allegations.

Both defendants are charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute in separate federal proceedings, according to the release. The charging documents, not the announcement, will govern the cases in court.

What the cases do and do not establish

The announcement identifies scheduled court dates and says the matters are being investigated by the FBI task force with assistance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It does not establish guilt or a final outcome in either case.

A criminal charge is an accusation. Any guilt finding, sentence or other disposition would be determined through the judicial process.
