South Suburban Man Charged in Murder of Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez

A 23-year-old man from the south suburbs has been charged with the murder of Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in the East Chatham neighborhood on November 4, 2024. The suspect, identified as Darion McMillian, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, residential burglary, unlawful use of a weapon—specifically a machine gun—and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. According to prosecutors, Officer Martinez and his partner conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with three occupants. As they approached, McMillian allegedly opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device and an extended magazine, striking Officer Martinez multiple times. The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Mario Chambers, was also fatally shot during the incident. McMillian then reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended after a brief pursuit.
